Conan The Barbarian Trailer

OK, let me just say I don’t plan on making this a regular thing.  Last week, I uploaded the trailers for X-Men: First Class because it has been a huge topic of conversation for The Fandom Menace.  We all want it to be good, but we have all had a lot of doubt with so little to go off of.  I posted the trailer for Immortals because I’ve got a wicked cinematic hard-on for anything Tarsem does.  This one?  This is all for Matt.

Conan the Barbarian was the movie that kicked off Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s career.  It is a mainstay of the 80’s fantasy genre, full of action, women and weapons.  It also kind of sucks.  Our own Matt Whitfield is the go-to guy for action and even he doesn’t think its very good.  By relaunching Conan, the studio is taking a huge chance.  Those who didn’t care for the original may not show and those who loved the original may be so offended by the idea of a remake that they will skip it too.  But, if they get it right this time, they may also be starting a modern relaunch that can do what so few remakes manage to accomplish.  My biggest problem with the rebooting of series in modern cinema is that they so often choose movies that were amazing the first time around and don’t warrant a remake.  It’s always been my thought that if the studios were smart, they would remake films that had a lot of potential and just missed the mark the first time around.  Conan is the perfect example of this.  Robert E. Howard’s classic character starred in 17 stories in the authors lifetime as well as countless comic books, animated series, and movies since then.  The character was created in 1932 and is still part of the public consciousness today which says a lot for his longevity.

So what do you think?  Was it a good idea to remake Conan the Barbarian and, if so, does it look like they’ve done it with this new movie?
