||Action Corner|| Fright Night

Welcome back to ACTION CORNER!!!  This time around I will be tackling a movie that is a remake of the 2nd highest grossing horror film of 1985…big stuff I know.  Fright Night is a 2011 action black comedy horror film about a young man in high school that finds out his neighbor is actually a vampire……and decides to take the fight to him before he can hurt anyone else.  Like I already stated, it is a remake of the 1985 film Fright Night, which was followed by a sequel in 1988 called get this………….Fright Night Part II.  This new film stars Anton Yelchin as Charlie Brewster, Colin Farrell as Jerry Dandridge, David Tennant as Peter Vincent, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as “Evil” Ed Thompson, Academy Award Nominee Toni Collette as Jane Brewster, Imogen Poots as Amy Peterson, and Dave Franco as Mark.  The music in the film is being written and composed by Ramin Djawadi.  The screenplay is being written by Marti Noxon based on the original story by Tom Holland.  The film is being directed by Craig GillespieFright Night is being produced by DreamWorks Pictures, Reliance EntertainmentGaeta / Rosenzweig Films, and Michael De Luca Productions, and is being distributed by Touchstone Pictures.

Fright Night (trailer #1)

I know this isn’t a true action movie, but I still get amped seeing this trailer.  I am not a fan of the original film, so I have no problem with this remake.  And from the looks of it, they are taking this movie away from the pure horror genre and are focusing on a more man-on-a-mission no-holds-barred kind of thing.  Anton Yelchin has been fun to watch ever since I saw him in Charlie Bartlett, and this movie is no exception.  The true gem though is seeing Colin Farrell as the vampire Jerry.  He has been doing an incredible job lately in choosing his movie roles.  Almost as though he is choosing movies that he wants to do now because he just wants to have fun.  While the trailer starts out as a very typical horror film, it quickly turns into a action thriller type of trailer when Charlie starts buying all the weapons necessary to take down a vampire.  The makers of this movie look as though they are taking a page out of Rogue Pictures remake of The Last House on the Left from 2009: take the original story, tweak it around, cut some of the fat, and make it your own, even if you change the genre slightly.  And to add to the remake cake, this movie was shot in glorious 3D!!!  I’m so sick of the 3D craze, but if I have to see a movie in 3D, at least it is being shot in 3D and not converted like Warner Bros. PicturesHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 or Nickelodeon MoviesThe Last Airbender.  Lesson is……if you are going to make a 3D movie, do us all a favor as the viewing public and shoot the damn thing in 3D.  I’m fed up with shitty post conversions.

Fright Night hits theaters on August 19, 2011 in 2D and Real D Digital 3D!!!

  1. I think a lot of the vampy fun may come from Noxin, the scribe. She was, after all, Joss Whedon’s second in command on Buffy for a few years there.

  2. Those were my thoughts exactly.
