Something new to ACTION CORNER, I will be discussing two smaller films to released either straight-to-DVD or in theaters. In particular, this week I will cover Killer Elite and Warrior.
Now this is what I’m talking about!!! I’m in that rare category of people that think the other Spider-Man movies are not very good, and Spider-Man 3 is on a whole other level of shit. Retelling this origin story is the perfect way to introduce these new actors (that are FAR superior to the old actors). It’s taken 3 movies, but we are finally going to see the Lizard on the big screen, and I am so thankful for it. Director Marc Webb is bringing something new to the table with this interpretation of the web slinger. I think the best way to do this too is by following the Ultimate-style setting and placing the story in high school. A huge disappointment to me though is seeing the film in 3D……POST CONVERSION 3D!!! I’M SO SICK OF POST CONVERSION!!! And I’m hoping that this conversion will at least be handled well. Oh well, that doesn’t mean that I am SUPER EXCITED to see this movie. Spider-Man is one of my favorite super heroes ever, and I don’t feel he was done justice with the previous films. Not at all.
AHAHAHAHA!!!! Oh I cannot wait for this one!!! Ever since Statham hit American theaters, he’s been turning awesome action movie after awesome action movie, and Killer Elite looks to be another gem added to the already impressive library. It’s movies like these that make me smile because they just remind me so much of those classic action movies from the 80s and 90s all too well. That’s when action movies were done right!!! Granted every now and then we get awesome movies like Summit and Millennium‘s Drive Angry, CBS and Millennium’s The Mechanic, and Lionsgate and Millennium’s The Expendables……notice something with one of the production companies??? Bringing in Clive Owen just adds to the awesomeness factor of the film. Clive Owen started out as this very talented dramatic actor, but ever since he appeared in Universal‘s The Bourne Identity, he really has become one of those go-to action guys, especially after doing movies like Dimension and Troublemaker‘s Sin City, New Line‘s Shoot ‘Em Up, and Columbia‘s The International!!! I can’t wait to see how the two men from over the seas play off each other. And to top it all off, ROBERT DE NIRO!!! ENOUGH SAID!!! I JUST CAN’T WAIT FOR SEPTEMBER!!!
Killer Elite hits theaters on September 23, 2011 in 2D!!!
Warrior
Warrioris a 2011 action drama film about a former boxer, whose alcoholism tore apart his family, welcomes back his youngest son and trains him to compete in a mixed martial arts tournament – a path that puts the son on a collision course with someone else competing in the tournament – his older brother.
Alright, a movie about mixed martial arts that is actually taking things seriously, and not like a stupid high school thing like Summit’s Never Back Down. Tom Hardy has already proven himself to be a capable actor with films like Paramount‘s Star Trek Nemesisand Warner Bros.‘ Inception, but the fact that he gained around 28 pounds of PURE MUSCLE for the role of Tom Conlon is just amazing to me. That is true dedication to his roles. Especially since this role led to Hardy being cast as Bane in DC‘s The Dark Knight Rises, because then he just had to gain even more muscle. He’s in the best shape of his life right now. Joel Edgerton also looks to be in amazing shape, but I’m questioning whether or not he can pull off the role effectively. I’ve seen him do drama in Apparition‘s The Squareand Working Title‘s Smokin’ Aces, but can he pull off the intense bare knuckle MMA/school teacher role of Brendan Conlon? I sure hope so because from the trailer he does look impressive. As far as Nick Nolte is concerned, I don’t even think he realizes he’s doing a movie. The guy has been through so much in his life that I’m surprised he’s still able to walk around. But he is an Academy Award Nominee. He should be a pleasure to watch. Honestly though, I’m not the biggest fan of MMA and this trailer really rips off the trailer for Paramount and Relativity‘s The Fighterlike crazy. I’m also afraid that the trailer may have revealed too much of the story too. You already know that one of the last fights is brother vs. brother. Did they reveal too much??? I guess we’ll find out. The thing I’m looking forward to the most though is just the bare knuckle-style, no holds barred fighting that I’m hoping this movie brings to the table!!!
Warrior hits theaters on September 9, 2011 in 2D!!!
